3 Ways I’m Structuring My Summer Differently

In the words of the internet, “Summer is summering.” Here in Montana, we go all out to enjoy the warm weather and the bonus hours of daylight. (Right now, sunset is at 9:20 pm!) This often means cramming in activities and socializing to the max, which, can be its own kind of stress. I know I want to say yes to everything just to avoid FOMO.

But this summer, I’ve been making a conscious effort to embrace the vibrant chaos. For one, I’ve got a 6.5-month-old. And I want to show her everything. I want to take her on outdoor adventures, and I want us to play outside while it’s still nice out! Spending a month in Europe also inspired me to plan ahead so I would be able to take care of myself and my clients while abroad. Here are some of the ways I’ve shifted running my creative business during the summer this year:

I planned ahead with intention.

Spending a month in Europe inspired me to plan ahead and shape my summer schedule in advance. I focused solely on my existing clients for June and July, stepping back from new projects to embrace more summer. In August, a few new projects will start, and come September, my schedule will be open for fresh work. (So, if you’re planning a fall launch or to get something done before year-end, consider this your heads up!)

I’m embracing a more cyclical nature in my work.

After five years of running my own business, I’ve realized that there are certain times of the year when people are more apt to start projects for their businesses. During the summer, it’s typically more about maintenance for my marketing management clients and continuing to create valuable content while everyone’s out living their best lives. Branding projects, websites, and launches usually pick up again in the fall. So, I decided to hit pause on starting new projects until the end of August to be able to embrace more summer spontaneity and also align with my client’s energy in their work.

I’m scheduling more moments of joy.

For the third consecutive year, I’ve printed out a 3-month calendar (July through September), color-coded it, and penciled in ideas that can add more fun to the blank days. Shoutout to the genius that is K.Lum for suggesting this!

What’s been your approach this summer? Have your plans flowed through or have you had to pivot on anything?
