How 30 Minutes A Day of Reading can Double Your Income
"If you can get yourself to read 30 minutes a day, you're going to double your income every year."
This blew my mind.
The quote is from Brian Tracy, but the thinking behind it is that 30 minutes a day of reading will get you somewhere between 1-2 books per month. Which is the equivalent of about what you read in a PhD program(!).
Now, I'm no productivity guru, but I figure if I can at least attempt to break my habit of picking up the phone every morning and try to replace those 30 minutes of scrolling in bed with 30 minutes of reading, (Hey, even 10 minutes would be good!) then that seems worth a shot towards attempting the goal of an at-home PhD.
(In reality, the only thing really working has been the move of my phone charger to the bathroom plug. The physical distance trumps my temptation to lazily roll over and scroll.)
So with that, I want to leave you with a few ideas for reading! Even if it's just a few minutes more, in our weekly lives.
Some recent books/magazines/podcasts I'm loving:
Reinventing Organizations
(The illustrated version!) I actually read this book three years ago when I was working with a team in the non-profit space. We were trying to build an inclusive organizational structure and this book was our guide. It's still one of the most impactful business books I've ever read for communications and team-building.
The Heroine's Journey
A recent read this winter on my own journey to discover the meaning of feminine energy and how to cultivate it more in my life. I probably bookmarked about 50 pages in this paperback.
Origin Magazine
My mom sent this to me for fun as part of a birthday package. I'm obsessed. It reads like an Instagram feed but feels much more meaningful.
Montana Woman Magazine
Megan Crawford, who purchased ownership of this magazine in 2019 with the gumption of completely reimagining what it could be, continues to awe me. In just shy of 18 months, with Megan at the helm, Montana Woman has become a platform for beautifully written stories that highlight the women who are creating magic across this state. Issues are available online, but it’s well worth it to grab a physical copy to read.
Down to Earth
Building, designing, and moving into a new home was my hallmark of 2020. There was no designer in our budget so instead, I put myself to school! This was one of the first design books I read and I was immediately fascinated by how the strategies around interior design very much parallel the strategies we as marketing professionals use for brand-building. Lauren Liess' explanations are also so easy to digest. Plus, if like me, your favorite color is neutral, then you'll love the visuals for design inspiration.

Almost 30 (Podcast)
These ladies crack. me. up. And also make me balk in wonder at their spiritual insights. The two lady host started this podcast when they were almost 30 (hence, the name), but self describe it as, "A chart-topping lifestyle podcast that covers everything from modern spirituality to health and wellness, aliens to entrepreneurship, sex to self-development."
